I studied at the Yerevan Dance College. During my school years I enjoyed participating in acrobatics.

In 1955, after finishing school and dance college, I started working as a ballet dancer in the State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. After having danced for two years, I served in the Soviet Army for three years. In 1960, I joined the newly established State Dance Ensemble. After four years of dancing in the Ensemble, I was first to be awarded the title of the Honored Artist of Armenia. In 1965, I was awarded the prestigious Lenin Prize. In 1967, as representative of Armenia in the USSR team. I toured in India, Laos and Cambodia, where the Cambodian King awarded me the Order of Honor. After my return home, during a training exercise, I fell and ultimately received a spinal injury.
